Unprecedented clampdown on Burhan Anniversary

Muzaffar Ahmad Wani said that he did not want any untoward incident or killing in the Valley.

Police and paramilitary personnel were deployed in strength across Kashmir and Internet services snapped to maintain law and order, officials said.

Strict curfew has been imposed in capital Srinagar and four districts of south Kashmir including Tral, the hometown of Burhan Wani, as well as parts of central and north Kashmir.

Separatist leaders, most of whom have been either confined to their homes or jailed, have called for a week of protests from Saturday to mark Wani's death.

The security apparatus across IHK, especially in the districts of Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian and Kulgam, has been beefed up.

The Jammu and Kashmir government has heightened security across the state ahead of former Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani's first death anniversary on July 8.

"His martyrdom made the worldwide community and world powers that they could no longer condone the grave human rights violations by the Indian forces", the prime minister said. Police objected to the presence of youths at Wani's home, who in turn were infuriated leading to stone-pelting. "Elsewhere in the valley, restrictions on the movement of people are being strictly enforced", he added.

Hizbul Plans Recruitment Drive On Burhan Wani Death Anniversary

Internet services on both mobile phones and fixed landline broadband connection also remain suspended for the second day on Saturday.

It was for all these reasons (perhaps more, we don't know), when Burhan died, Kashmiris called him a "martyr".

The Kashmir University has postponed all exams that were scheduled to be held on July 8 in wake possible protests that may take place on Wani's first death anniversary.

The vacations coincide with a protest schedule issued by the separatists and Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir based United Jehad Council (UJC), an umbrella of militant organizations.

The concerns of the Centre and Jammu and Kashmir Government have augmented as the annual Amaranth Yatra is going on in the state.

In Tral town, the youth tried to defy curfew and march towards Burhan's grave at Sharifabad area.

While peaceniks feel that the Kashmir cauldron could be resolved by dialogue and decreasing the presence of force, the Indian Army as per the instructions of the Narendra Modi government has made a decision to take a tough stand against anyone found involved in "anti-national" activities.
