America's Cup Day 1: Two Wins But Plenty to Improve

Team New Zealand admit they couldn't have asked for a better start to the America's Cup final after opening up a 3-0 lead on defenders Team USA.

But Emirates Team New Zealand was able to live with Oracle Team USA, and after both boats flew to mark 1 nearly level the Kiwi yacht found a click more pace to take the lead.

Australian Spithill's Oracle team now faces an uphill battle to win the 35th edition of the competition, where the trophy is earned by the first team to reach seven points.

"Credit to Peter [Burling] and Emirates Team New Zealand because they made fewer mistakes to win both races".

"Jimmy (Spithill) and Oracle Team USA sailed really well to put us under a lot of pressure, but we managed to keep our composure and sail really well".

"I definitely think this bonus point advantage is going to be important", Spithill said.

The two-time defending America's Cup champions are foundering badly against hotshot young helmsman Peter Burling and Emirates Team New Zealand, who are threatening to sail - and cycle - away with the oldest trophy in global sports.

“We have to remember that and clearly weve got to make some steps forward in boat speed.

"You like to sort of keep going while you're on a bit of a roll, but the schedule is the schedule and we've known that for a long time - we understand while they have chosen to hold it over the weekends", said Ashby.

"We're under no illusions", helsman Peter Burling, 26, said.

Burling has barely engaged in the start box, keeping out of trouble and relying on boat speed to hand them an early advantage on the first two legs.

"We're more anxious about the boat - how to make the boat quicker, how to get around the track quicker".

There are five days until the concluding races on the Great Sound, and Spithill admits they have their work cut out.

"Halfway way up that second beat we definitely lost a lot and we have to go away and keep learning and improving", admitted Burling.

Spithill thinks the splashdown was caused by a problem with one of the rudders.

For race two Emirates Team New Zealand again led around mark one.

The second race saw a tense start, which was also won by New Zealand.
