Black off-duty St. Louis officer shot by white officer

An African American off-duty officer was shot by a fellow white cop in St. Louis' North Pointe neighborhood after a auto chase ended in a crash outside the off-duty officer's home.

"At this time, a responding officer just arriving in the area observed this and fearing for his safety and apparently not recognising the off-duty officer, discharged a shot, striking the off-duty officer in the arm", Mr O'Toole said.

According to St. Louis Interim Police Chief Lawrence O'Toole, the 38 year old officer is an 11 year veteran of the force.

Seven officers have been placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.

. Someone in the stolen vehicle then opened fire at the pursuing officers, so they backed off but continued to follow the auto. Interim Police Chief Lawrence O'Toole says gunfire rang out after tire-flattening device was used on the suspect's auto and again when the vehicle stopped less than a mile later. Two on-duty officers ordered him to the ground but then recognized him and told him to stand up and approach them.

A suspect was hit in the ankle.

Given the rash of Black people being shot by police officers in the past few years, it shouldn't come to anyone's surprise that a Black police officer would be shot by his own.

The off-duty officer heard the commotion from his home nearby and rushed to the scene with his department-issued weapon. The off-duty officer was taken to the hospital in stable condition. He notes there's no evidence in the police report that the off-duty officer posed any sort of threat, and yet the officer who shot him is said to have feared for his safety.

But the department later confirmed the frustrating circumstances leading to the officer's injury.

The Post-Dispatch first reported those details Thursday morning based on police sources with knowledge of the shooting. Two guns were recovered from the suspects.

The Force Investigative Unit responded to the scene.

Cortney Smith, 17, of the 10500 block of Seaton Drive in Bellefontaine Neighbors, was charged with 15 felonies: seven counts each of first-degree assault and armed criminal action and one count of motor vehicle tampering. They were jailed on $500,000 cash-only bond.

St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson was at the hospital Wednesday night.

The scene is in the North Pointe neighborhood.
