In spite of tweet, lawyer says Trump not under investigation

Last week I wrote that the biggest danger Trump faces from the special counsel investigation is not the obstruction probe, but Mueller's digging into the finances of Trump's associates. He made similar comments in three other TV appearances last Sunday. Two days after the Post story ran, and with no official confirmation from Special Counsel Robert Mueller, himself a former FBI director who is now overseeing the Russian Federation investigation and, according to reports, the investigation into Trump's possible obstruction, Trump issued the following statement via his Twitter account. University of Tennessee law professor Glenn Reynolds, who also publishes the popular Instapundit blog, wrote an op-ed for USA Today on Monday arguing that Mueller "has a disqualifying conflict of interest" if he pursues any obstruction investigation against Trump.

Asked if the president might not know of an investigation, Sekulow said: "I can't imagine a scenario where the president would not be aware of it".

The source familiar with the Mueller probe told Reuters that Mueller was also examining whether Trump or others tried to interfere with the investigation.

On 14 June 2017, The Washington Post reported that Trump had come under investigation for obstruction of justice after firing Comey, who did not comply with Trump's requests.

From there, Sekulow pivoted to the topic of leaks, saying, "The only reason we're talking about this is because of what?" Thereupon, we were treated to heated debates - including an uncharacteristically cringe-inducing one Fox's Chris Wallace conducted with Sekulow - over whether Trump was acknowledging that he is under investigation ... or been told he was under investigation ... or ... something.

Sekulow is so certain that Trump is under investigation that even when he's trying to do damage control over two Freudian slips that confirm Trump is under investigation, Sekulow releases another Freudian slip, beginning to reference the inves...never mind... "No, he's not being investigated!".

US President Donald Trump says he's being investigated for firing Federal Bureau of Investigation director
Rosenstein also approved the appointment of Mueller as special counsel after the recusal of Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Sad!" he wrote. "Despite the phony Witch Hunt going on in America, the economic & jobs numbers are great.

Then, Sekulow continued, Trump took their recommendations to remove Comey, and "now according to The Washington Post's theory, he's under investigation for taking the action that the Department of Justice told him to take".

Sekulow renewed the suggestion that Trump fired the Federal Bureau of Investigation director at the recommendation of the deputy attorney general.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Mueller as special counsel following Comey's ouster in early May. Sekulow added that Trump is "very effective" with his use of social media. "Will he say I'm no longer talking about the Russian Federation investigation?"

The FBI "doesn't sit around all day and read tweets", said Rubio, a Republican from Florida who's a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee.

The leaders of the Senate judiciary committee have reached an agreement about the scope of an investigation into political interference at the FBI, with the possibility that the inquiry could explore whether President Donald Trump acted improperly during his interactions with fired FBI Director James Comey. House Speaker Paul Ryan said the special counsel should be allowed to "do his job" and that "the best vindication for the president is to let this investigation to go on independently and thoroughly".

But in his contentious Sunday interviews, Sekulow said the tweet had been misinterpreted.
