Congressional Aide Who Survived Virginia Shooting: 'I Was Running for My Life'

A gunman this morning opened fire at a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia, where Republican members of Congress were practicing, wounding U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, the Associated Press and major news outlets reported.

Also injured in the shooting was Zach Barth, a legislative correspondent working for Rep. Roger Williams (R-Texas).

"Congressman Williams was not shot, however a member of his staff was shot and is receiving medical attention", a statement posted to Williams' Twitter account read in part.

Williams and Barth thanked the two U.S. Capitol Police officers who were also wounded on Wednesday after engaging in gunfire with the assailant.

Bleeding from his leg, he said he ran as fast as he could and jumped into the first base dugout with Rep. Williams attempting to take cover from the shooter.

Managers for the teams said they are taking security precautions for the players and those in the audience for the game.

"We're going to play, we need to play", Williams said.

As the Conservative Party appear to be struggling to cinch a deal with the DUP , the Labour leader still hopes he could become PM. Following the United Kingdom election on June 9, Mr Corbyn's Labour party scored 40.3 percent of the vote.

Scalise was hit in the hip and is expected to survive.

"Republican", Duncan said before departing.

"Capitol Police came and they took a step forward and not a step back", Williams said. On Wednesday night, the eve of Thursday's game, Doyle announced that the Democratic team had invited the GOP team to dinner at their club.

The American Civil Liberties Union says it will ask an Oklahoma court to review the case of a woman who was sentenced to 30 years in prison for failing to report that her boyfriend was abusing her children. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., and Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala., tied a tourniquet around Barth's wounded leg using Brooks' belt.

His boss, Representative Roger Williams from Austin, dove for cover in that same dugout. "I think these people that want to destroy our lives and our livelihood here in America, they win if we give in".

There were as many as 22 members of Congress at the field for the practice, with the annual Congressional Baseball Game set to be played at Nationals Park at 7 p.m. Thursday, despite the shooting. "They have got me going to where I will be okay where I can move around at the game and then I will go home tomorrow night and get it fixed".

President Donald Trump said the assailant, identified as James T. Hodgkinson, has died. "I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand".
