Hamilton County in a tornado watch

A tornado watch is now in place for North Florida until 3 p.m. due to active weather across portions of the panhandle.

A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for Midlands counties until 8 p.m. Wednesday.

We also have the possibility that some of the storms this evening could intensify with the main treat being gusty winds, hail and the possibility for some small tornadoes. A few of the thunderstorms could become severe and be capable of producing damaging winds, isolated tornadoes and marginally severe hail.

A Tornado Warning has been issued for Pomaria, Peak and Jenkinsville until 4:00pm. It takes an inch of rain to lower the drought index by 100 points, so passing showers or thunderstorms are not enough to end drought conditions.

Watches and warnings are issued by the Storm Prediction Center after consultation with the National Weather Services offices.

Residents should remain indoors and keep in mind that severe hail can potentially smash vehicle windshields, cause injuries and punch holes in roofs, the National Weather Service said.

The cold front that will spark the biggest storms should sweep the first storms across the state line from Alabama into Georgia late in the morning.

A possible tornado touched down in Sampson County, North Carolina on Tuesday, injuring at least one person. The chance of thunderstorms or precipitations will hover at 50 percent starting at midnight and into Wednesday, and rising somewhat in early afternoon. With this heavy rain, localized flooding is likely in parts of Northeast Florida.
