Twenty children have been killed in a minibus crash near the South African capital Pretoria, emergency services have said.

The minibus burst into flames after the collision. The cause of the crash is unknown.

The Gauteng Province's education department tweeted "18 learners" and two adults, including the driver, were killed on the scene after the bus collided head-on with a truck.

Seven students were rescued by emergency services.

"The fire services had already extinguished the burning vehicle, which was found lying on its side". A number of children had already been pulled out by "members of the community", the statement said.

The vehicle was ferrying children from school when it collided with the truck between the towns of Verena and Bronkhorstpruit, northeast of the capital Pretoria, Russel Meiring, ER24 spokesman said. Several other children were injured, with reports that some of them were dragged from the wreckage by people at the scene.

Department of education spokesman Steve Mabona said some of the bodies of the children were charred beyond recognition.

South Africa has some of the deadliest roads in the world. Road deaths rose to 235 during in 2017's Easter weekend compared with 156 fatalities in 2016, transport officials said earlier on Friday.
